Review: More Die of Heartbreak - Chuckie Campbell

Any hip hop fans out there? If so, you've got to check out Chuckie Campbell. This New York native is making audiences stand up and take notice with his new album, More Die of Heartbreak. That's because he's innovative and writes songs about real life issues happening in our society. Unlike a lot of others in this genre, he not only has the fast flow and catchy beats, but smart and creative words to back it up. It's exactly what's been missing from this kind of community for decades.

More Die of Heartbreak, which gets its name from a Saul Bellow novel, is one that's a must have. In it, Campbell tells the story of how he was once physically assaulted, resulting in a broken jaw, and the effect that the incident had on his life and relationships. He reminds his listeners "that for every one person who makes it out alive, more will die of heartbreak."

From the first track to the last, More Die of Heartbreak is strong and full of lyrical depth, leaving room for endless discussions. However, like any album, there are definitely a couple of standouts. For starters, we can't get enough of "Synesthesia". With lyrics like "divisions cannot heal until people can see clear...our nation cannot heal until patterns in how we think," Campbell calls for a change in our world.  He goes on to list all of the wrongs that our society is plagued with like racism and drug use. Campbell makes the point that as soon as we open our minds and take action, the generational and social gaps can begin closing.

"Against the Grain" is another one of our favorite tracks off More Die of Heartbreak. This song, which features members of the Wu Tang Clan like Cappadona and Solomon Childs, has a vibe that we cannot get enough of. These artists feed off each other, producing a high energy number. When "Against the Grain" first starts off, it has a sound that's reminiscent to something you'd hear while doing the tango, but it then quickly incorporates a beat that will be stuck in your head for a long time to come. This is definitely our jam.
