Review: Half Life - Marla Mase

Remember when we introduced you to Marla Mase back in September? For those who need a refresher, Mase's music is a mix of rock, punk, spoken word, and soul and she's even been compared to the likes of Patti Smith, David Byrne, Frank Zappa and Iggy Pop. Well, now that the New York native is signed to True Groove Records, she's gearing up to release her EP, Half Life.

Half Life, which gets its name from the Junot Diaz quote 'the half-life of love is forever', features eight unique tracks. The third one on it, "Things That Scare Me", is our absolute favorite. Besides being a fun, funk number that you'll want to dance the night away to, the song's lyrics drive in a fantastic life lesson. You have to push yourself past your limits. Fear should never be an excuse, because you never know what you can achieve when you  reach outside of your comfort zone. This is exactly what we love about Mase. She consistently produces great beats, melodies and lyrics to live by.

Another standout song for us is the title track, "Half Life". This number has a great bluesy feel to it, with a clear trumpet solo thrown in towards the end, as well as that signature snap we've come to expect in jazz music. Plus, here, she not only gets to show off her spoken word skills, but her vocal chops too. After one listen to "Half Life", you'll see that Mase can really sing.

Make sure to buy your copy of  Half Life on February 25th. For now though, check out her official site, Twitter and Facebook page.
