Being based in the New York City area, we love discovering new local talent. That's exactly what we found when we stumbled upon Marla Mase. Her music has been described as a mix of rock, punk, spoken word and reggae. Some have even compared her to the likes of Patti Smith, David Byrne, Frank Zappa and Jim Morrison. Heads up Pop City Life readers, this is one artist to keep an eye out for.
This singer/songwriter, who hails from New York City, does it all. In the past, she's written everything from songs to plays to blogs. That's not all though. She writes, produces, and sings all of her own music. Since starting out, she's released a couple albums like the 2010 rock opera A Brief Night Out and most recently SPEAK DELUXE.
SPEAK DELUXE, which came out on February 28th of this year, features a whopping 16 songs. Ten of those songs were previously released on the original 2010 album, while the other six are brand new. That of course includes the song "Piece of Peace", which Mase debuted live in Linzhou, China last year.
"Piece of Peace" was written for UN Global Peace Day, when she was invited by the Friends of the UN to perform there. We love the message this song has in particular. With the recent events of the Boston bombing, "Piece of Peace" has never been more relevant. The message is simple. We need to end all the violence going on in the world today. Throw that together with its repetitive lyrics and catchy drum beat from the Tomás Doncker Band , and you won't be able get this one of your head.
The "Piece of Peace" music video showcases footage from Mase's time in China. One thing we couldn't help but notice in it is how passionate Mase is for her music. She has this way of performing that is so striking. You can literally feel the lyrics she's singing, which is a rare and incredibly special thing.
