Review: Monks of Mellonwah

If you love bands like Muse, The Black Keys and Incubus, you’re going to want to check out Monks of Mellonwah. These Sydney, Australia natives have a sound that can best be described as a mix of alternative and rock music. Thanks to their blend of intense space, driving riffs and sharp metaphors, Monks of Mellonwah are unlike any other artists in the music industry today.

Back in 2010, the four-piece band released their first EP, Stars Are Out. As their radio play increased over the next year, the guys put out their first music video, “Swamp Groove”. The song was even played on ABC’s music program RAGE. That’s not all though. The music video won first prize at “Harold’s Short” short film festival.

Following the success of Stars Are Out, they delivered their second EP. Neurogenesis came out in May of 2012 to worldwide critical acclaim. It was featured everywhere from MTV to Takeover Magazine. This of course led to both international and national radio play. With all the newfound media attention, The Monks of Mellonwah earned licensing spots with a bunch of high-profile US production companies like Discovery Networks and Bunim Murray.

Their music video for “Neverending Spirit”, which is off their Neurogenesis EP, is one of our favorites from the band. It shows behind-the-scenes footage of the guys hanging out, thrown together with home videos of them as babies. We love when music videos have a personal touch like this. It lets you feel a little more connected with the artists.

Their sound is a breath of fresh air that is welcome on any playlist. Dare I say it, I'm reminded a bit of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It reminds me of the good things you would hear on MTV back when the network actually played music. It's no surprise that the group has enjoyed lots of exposure with MTV Networks. With their full length debut album in the works, it's not hard to imagine why fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting what will come next. And signing a development deal with A&R Worldwide can only mean good things. Adele, Coldplay, and Muse are some fantastically talented company to be in. We see lots of success ahead for this band and we can't wait to see what the future holds.
