The Butler, directed by Lee Daniels has certainly made a name for itself since it came out on August 16th. The film tells the story of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), who served eight presidents during his time as a butler in the White House. He was there during crucial, historical periods such as, the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War. The Butler has been number one at the box since it debuted.
This film has gained many fans, one of them being the country’s current president. President Obama went and saw the film and had nothing but high praise for the acting and the storyline.
“I did see 'The Butler,' and I did tear up. I teared up just thinking about not just the butlers who have worked here in the White House, but an entire generation of people who were talented and skilled, but because of Jim Crow, because of discrimination, there was only so far they could go. And yet, with dignity and tenacity, they got up and worked every single day, and put up with a whole lot of mess because they hoped for something better for their kids."
We all know President Obama is a busy man, so it was really surprising that he was able to take time out to see the film. His comments on the film are nothing short of honorable. The president also took the time to give a shout out to one of the film’s actors.
“Oprah, my girl, she can act. She's just a wonderful actress.” Oprah Winfrey starred in the movie as Cecil Gaines’ wife, Gloria.
If you haven’t had the chance to go see The Butler as of yet, perhaps the president’s own words might serve as influence.
