Come take a glimpse into a family that defies traditional views of what a family is supposed to look like. A family that carries more love and strength than your traditional family outlook. They’re not your average family. They’re more than that. They’re the Fosters.
The Fosters is a brand new show that premiered on ABC Family on June 3. So far, only 5 episodes have aired, but this show is setting the stage to be a remarkable show that ABC Family has ever taken on.
Meet Callie Jacob, a foster child who has spent the last few years of her life in and out of different foster homes, since her mother died, just trying to gain a little perspective of that thing we call family. The closest thing she has to family is her little brother, Jude. Her last stay at a foster home resulted in her getting put in juvie. She comes off as one tough cookie, but if you watch closely, you know it’s just a defense mechanism. She’s looking for the same thing every child deserves to have: love and acceptance. And now it looks like she just might get it when Lena takes her in.
Lena Adams agrees to let Callie into her home. Lena meets Callie just as she’s released from juvie and understandably, she’s a little apprehensive about letting Callie into her home. But one look in Callie’s eyes and she can see. She can see the scared girl who’s just looking for a safe place.
Stef Foster is Lena’s partner. She’s a cop on the streets, but a loving and devoted family wife all around. She was married to a man named Mike before she divorced him because she realized she was gay. Her and Mike have a son together, Brandon, who lives with her, Lena, and the other kids.
Brandon Foster is the oldest child and very gifted piano player. He looks out for his younger siblings, Jesus and Mariana. When Callie arrives, Brandon looks out for her, too. Talya, Brandon’s girlfriend, is not pleased with the arrival of Callie and her jealousy grows even more when Brandon blows her off and begins to spend more time with Callie instead. It isn’t until the fifth episode where Brandon finally realizes that way he feels about Callie goes way beyond brotherly.
Jesus and Mariana Foster are twins who came to live with Lena and Stef as foster children, but were adopted later on. Jesus is the carefree, calm and collected one of the two while Mariana has her own demons to fight and is still hanging on to pieces of her past. Jesus and Mariana have a pretty strong relationship, but all that may change now that Jesus started going out with Mariana’s best friend, Lexi.
Jude Jacob is Callie’s younger brother. It becomes evident that Jude’s not like all the other boys at school when he goes to school with his nails painted. The fact that he’s obviously gay, makes him a target for being bullied, but he chooses to remain true to who he is and won’t even let Callie tell him to be otherwise. It’s not that Callie isn’t accepting of who he is, she’s just being the protective, older sister who doesn’t want to see Jude get hurt just because he’s different because she has a better knowledge of how unkind and scary the world can be.
The Fosters are more than just family. They’re a team who lean on each other for anything and everything. Together they face the everyday challenges that comes with growing up and not being your average family. So definitely check it out.
