Monday night’s episode of The Fosters showed why this show is one you don’t want to miss. New loves flames form. But old flames always seem to have that habit of never quite burning out completely. Despite the ups and downs, there’s one thing this family knows they have at the end of the day, each other.
Recap of The Fosters: “Saturday”
Jesus is really nervous about having Lexi’s parents over because they’re known to be really religious and conservative. This alone sets the stage for worry for Lena and Stef, especially when Jesus asks them for permission to go to a Bible camp. Mariana is still on the fence with Jesus and Lexi because they didn’t tell her about their budding romance from the beginning.
Callie has to attend a mandatory group session for foster kids, but rally doesn’t see the point in going. She’d much rather spend her time with Wyatt, her new flame.
Brandon has an important piano audition to get a scholarship to be taught by one of the state’s best piano teachers.
Mariana lies to Lena when she says she’s going to meet Garret at a restaurant. But in reality, Mariana goes to meet her and Jesus’ birth mom, Anna. The last time Mariana met with Anna, she gave Anna money and Anna just disappeared right after. This time around, Anna gives Mariana a late birthday gift, a teddy bear.
Stef goes and visits her father while bringing him groceries because he lives alone. Her father has never truly accepted the fact that Stef is gay and divorced Mike to be with Lena. When she was younger, her father had sent her to a youth minister because he caught her and her friend, another girl, cuddling on the couch. He doesn’t see that Stef made the choice to be happy, but rather, she made the choice to be gay.
At the group session for foster kids, Callie meets Sarah, a girl who’s staying with the foster family Callie once stayed with, but got kicked out when she and the family’s son, Liam, got involved and Liam blamed everything on her. Callie decides to get more information from Sarah by asking her out for coffee. Callie starts asking Sarah a bunch of questions and accidentally lets Liam’s name slip out, but Sarah never actually said Liam’s name.
Mike is late picking up Brandon for a piano audition, but they still make it. Brandon begins to play and then freezes. Luckily, Mike speaks with the teacher and blames himself for not getting Brandon there on time, which is why Brandon’s whole game was off. Mike’s persistence earns Brandon another chance to play. The teacher is impressed with Brandon’s talent, tells him he wants to take him on as a student, but the scholarship was already given to someone else, which means Brandon now has to pay for classes. Mike agrees to pay so Brandon can have this opportunity.
Mariana convinces Callie to take her to Wyatt’s foreclosure party. Mariana gets drunk with an old friend and learns that Jesus and Lexi slept together. Wyatt goes into a rage and starts destroying his house. Callie is eventually able to get him to calm down and it’s here where you can see their connection in all its rarity and beauty. Callie goes looking and finds a very drunk Mariana. Waiting for Mariana, Callie comes face-to-face with her old flame, Liam, who warns her to stay away from Sarah.
The dinner with Lexi’s parents is going well until Stef’s father stops by and ends up joining them. He asks Jesus to talk about the Church Bible camp, but Stef interrupts and says he’s probably not even going to go. Lexi’s mother inquires why and Stef tells her that she doesn’t want anyone to tell Jesus that her and Lena’s relationship is wrong because they’re gay. Lexi’s parents assure Stef and Lena that that’s not the case and they support Stef and Lena’s family. Stef’s father is surprised when they say that and questions how they can consider themselves to be good Catholics when they support homosexuality. He doesn’t think Stef and Lena should be allowed to get married because marriage is supposed to be between man and woman. When Stef sees her father out after dinner, he ends up apologizing for sending her to the youth minister and for scaring her when she was a kid. Callie and Mariana get home and go to the dining room. Lexi’s mom tells Mariana to come with Jesus to the bible camp and in her drunken stupor, Mariana lets it slip that Jesus and Lexi have had sex.
Just as Callie goes to bed, her phone vibrates and she sees that Liam posted a comment on one of her Instagram photos of a tree right outside her room.
