Review: Orange is the New Black

If you haven't tuned into the new Netflix Original Series 'Orange Is The New Black' then I only have one question for you: What the heck are you waiting for?! The exclusive series created by Jenji Kohan, who also happens to be the brain behind hit comedy series 'Weeds', (loved that show!) has struck gold again with this laugh-out-loud tale that is based on Piper Kerman's memoir which goes by the same title.

Piper Chapman, played by actress Taylor Schilling, is a women originally from Connecticut who lives in the Big Apple and as you find out in the opening scenes, is sent to women's federal prison in Litchfield, NY. Why, you ask? Piper is in prison for possessing a suitcase full of drug money for her one-time lover, Alex Vause, (played by Laura Prepon from That 70's Show) ten years ago. The show centers around Piper's fifteen-month sentence and the hardships that come with prison life, which may also cause her to change from the person she was before entering to a different person she probably never imagined herself to be by the time she gets out.

Upon watching some of the initial episodes, viewers get to know other characters who affect Piper in and outside of jail such as her fiancĂ© Larry (Jason Biggs), her best friend Polly Harper (Maria Dizzia), go-to woman in prison Galina 'Red' Reznikov (Kate Mulgrew), and Susanna Warren aka 'Crazy Eyes' (Uzo Aduba) whose antics are hilarious; other prison-mates are introduced throughout the show as well. We also get to learn some of the stories behind said inmates and their reason for being behind bars which is getting pretty interesting and helps piece together the story line overall.

In my humble opinion, 'Orange Is The New Black' gets two thumbs up for being funny as hell while bringing us a fresh spin to the usual television series we are often introduced to.
