It’s been a long time coming for singer/songwriter Miguel. The Los Angeles native has had hits in the past with songs like “All I Want is You”. And though the single was a favorite amongst radio, Miguel’s debut album was commercially unappreciated. That is until now. His sophomore album Kaleidoscope Dream proves to be a musical dream and musical success.
This album is not only popular but it is good -- damn good. The type of good that doesn’t require you to skip over a track. And a lot of this has to do with Miguel’s ability to paint a musical picture that blends hip hop, funk, rock, and electro to give his fans a kaleidoscope of different sounds over his smooth, sensual, and very sexual lyrics.
But the critical acclaim for KD evolves from the unique backdrop each song illustrates. Miguel sings about love: asserting his unwavering commitment in tracks like “Adorn”. While on the other end of the love-themed spectrum, there’s the libido-driven track “Arch & Point” where Miguel asserts, “I’m saying rhythm is a talent that cannot be taught . . . When it feels so good then it just come natural”.
But wait, Miguel isn’t done. The various colors of his musical artistry continue with songs like “Candles in the Sun”, where he stresses humanity’s responsibility for one another. He also touches upon individual idealism on the track “Where’s the Fun in Forever”, urging the ideology of freedom and living in the now.
All in all, Miguel’s dream of producing a work of art that is thoughtful, soulful, and seductive shows him to be a true artist who gives his fans a continuously changing pattern of himself.
