Recap: I Do - The Fosters

Written by Regan Brown

A wedding that was long overdue.  The misruling of justice that will never be seen or heard of.  The kiss that could destroy the one thing you’ve been longing for.  A goodbye that came abruptly, but was never spoken out loud.  These are the major highlights from Monday night’s season one, summer finale of The Fosters.

Recap of The FostersI Do

After being shot and ending up in the hospital, Stef realizes just how short and precious life is when you’ve got everything you could ever want and/or need: someone to love, someone to love you back, and a family.  Having come to this “eureka” frame of mind, she finally asks Lena to marry her after 10 years together.  Stef’s mother and Lena’s parents arrive to help out with the ceremony.  Lena’s father (played by Stephen Collins from7th Heaven) got himself ordained online so he could preside over the ceremony (makes sense now, huh?).  However, while everyone else is in “wedding” mode, Stef keeps throwing out negative comments in regards to what she and Lena are about to do.  At first glance, it seems as if she’s now against the wedding, but we find out later on that that’s simply not the case.

After going to the police and confessing to them that Liam raped her when she was a foster kid at his house two years ago, Callie has her pretrial coming up, but things are not looking in her favor.  She finds out from the D.A. that given her record, her case will never go to trial and that she has a better chance of putting Liam in jail (for only one year…maybe) if she takes the stand and lies about what really happened!!  How absurd is that!!  If she tells the judge that what happened between her and Liam was consensual (as in, she agreed to it), she could get him on statutory rape because she was 15 and he was 19 at the time.  In the end, Callie opts to tell the truth and Liam walks away free.

Callie’s ex-flame Wyatt (they’re still friends) tells her that he and his mother are moving to Indiana to live with his mother’s parents now that they’ve lost their house.  Wyatt will be driving up to Indiana on the weekend, which proves to be helpful to Callie at the end of the episode.

Stef goes to visit her father who’s really not for this wedding and we find out that the reason why she’s being so negative towards the wedding is not because she feels that what she and Lena is wrong, but because she knows her father feels that way and she can’t get his voice out of her head.  She tells him that if he’s not really behind her and Lena’s wedding, she doesn’t want him there because she only wants people who are happy for her to be there.  In the end, he doesn’t show.

Lena and Stef gather Callie, Jude, Brandon, Jesus, and Mariana into the living room the morning of their wedding and offer Callie and Jude the one thing they’ve been in search of and hoping for: they want to adopt them and officially make them a part of the family.  Of course Callie and Jude happily say yes.

Brandon and Talya are back together again, but that doesn’t mean that Brandon isn’t still harboring feelings for Callie that go way beyond brotherly love.  And what makes this even more complicated is that Callie has finally realized that she’s harboring feelings for Brandon that go way beyond sisterly love.  This all comes to the surface when Callie drags Brandon away just before the wedding and the two end up kissing.  Of course they get caught! I’m not going to lie, but I thought it would’ve been Talya who caught them, but it wasn’t.  It was Jude.  Callie runs after him and Jude tells her to stop being so selfish because they come as a package deal and it’s not a secret anymore that if a foster kid hooks up with someone from his/her foster family, the foster kid(s) gets kicked out.  Uh-oh!

Jesus learns that Lexi and her parents are going to Honduras to visit her dying grandmother.  What makes this different is that by now we all know that Lexi and her parents are living in the country illegally.  Jesus tells Lexi that he will wait for her to come back, but what he doesn’t know (and neither does Lexi for that matter) is that she won’t be coming back (a revelation made by her parents during the wedding reception).

At the wedding ceremony, Stef and Lena decide to give their own vows and are officially pronounced wife and wife.  During the wedding reception, Mariana dedicates Macklemore and Ray Lewis’ song “Same Love” (a song that supports gay marriage and equality) to her moms.

While everyone is sleeping, Callie packs her things and leaves.  She shows up at Wyatt’s house the next morning and tells him she needs a ride.  He asks her where and she says, Indiana.  At first Wyatt tells her no and Callie walks away, but then Wyatt pulls up in his car and Callie gets in.  I guess this was ultimately and sadly her way of making sure Jude didn’t get screwed out of having a chance to have a family due to her and Brandon’s feelings for each other.

The Fosters will return in January 2014 with all new episodes, but if for some ungodly reason you missed Monday night’s episode, you can still check it out here
